When students think about sports at our school, squash is rarely the first thing that comes to mind. In fact, many don’t even realize that our school has its own squash courts, let alone a talented and dedicated team. But behind the scenes, the squash program has been quietly building strength, even sending two players to college squash programs two years ago. For a team that operates with almost no spotlight, that is a major achievement.
Senior Gitu Iyer shared that while she has heard of the team, she has never been to a match and does not feel like squash is integrated into the school’s overall sports culture. She explained that it feels “kind of random, not because the team lacks talent, but because the sport itself is unfamiliar to most students.”
Senior Kennedy Brewer expressed something similar. Brewer admitted that she does not know much about the team and has never attended a match. She said “squash does not feel connected to the sports students talk about, and the team does not get the same visibility or hype as other sports, which makes it easy for students to overlook it.”
Both students agreed that the school could do more to highlight squash, whether it’s through better promotion, fun events around matches, or incentives that encourage students to show up and support the team. They believe that if more people actually saw squash in action, interest would grow. And they are right. Squash is a fast, strategic, high-energy sport that deserves the same recognition as any other team on campus. The players train intensely, compete at a high level, and represent our school with pride. What they are missing is not skill, it is awareness.

One part of the squash program that many students never hear about is just how much the team travels. Both the girls and boys squads compete in tournaments across multiple cities throughout the season, including a major trip to Philadelphia for team nationals. At nationals, players face off against athletes from all over the United States, giving them the chance to compete at a truly national level. For many team members, this isn’t just a competition but one of the most memorable parts of the season. Traveling together, rooming together, and sharing team dinners create a unique bonding experience that brings the group closer and strengthens the program as a whole.
Take a moment to discover the sport happening right under our noses. Check out a match, visit the courts, or just learn a little more about the team that has been quietly excelling for years. With the right attention, squash could become not just an underrated program, but one of the most exciting sports our school has to offer.
