Grammy-winning musician, composer, and educator Jon Batiste visited The Seven Hills School on October 21, 2025. Bringing students together in the Schiff Center auditorium, Batiste delivered an inspiring speech and performance, which encouraged students to pursue their passion, push through, and celebrate music. He not only spoke to the audience, but also sparked interest in many rising talents, taught students how to uplift others, and shared the connection between art and life.
Although the whole experience was enjoyed, many students and faculty do not know what happened behind the scenes. Paula Wallace, the president of Savannah College of Art and Design, was visiting schools all over the country to inspire students. During these trips, Batiste was with her and they encouraged everyone to explore arts. “She was so impressed with the Seven Hills students who went to SCAD, so she wanted to meet them,” said Dr. Matt Bolton, head of the school. Wallace’s first visit to Seven Hills resulted in her and Batiste flying in to talk to the student body.

Batiste created an environment that made the whole room fill with excitement and energy just by playing his music. This successful jazz artist with numerous hits is known for his lively style. “I would describe his music as dynamic, cultural, rich, and celebratory,” said senior Sabrina Donovan. The scene was inclusive to all, and as Dr. Bolton said, “My favorite part was him interacting in conversations.” Batiste had a way of keeping many teens focused while also getting laughs out of the crowd.
During the performance, Batiste was backed up by a jazz band formed of Upper School students. These young musicians were presented with the chance to play alongside this widely known artist and they spent time preparing to showcase their skills. Batiste gave performers and the audience a new perspective on music’s effect. Donovan said she felt a “newfound sense of mental freedom, and [she] felt alive.”

Batiste didn’t just create a musical impact, but he also created a deeper understanding of finding what one loves. He conveyed to the audience that embracing something with special meaning to one can be used to help people around. He encouraged everyone to follow their creative thoughts and connect with the community. Dr Bolton said, “He shared a lot of lessons about what it means to be true to yourself as opposed to trying to be externally successful.” Batiste showed all students that one can reach for any height by having passion and dedication.
Another theme Batiste emphasized was the importance of education in the process of shaping one’s future. During his on-stage conversation, Wallace accompanied him. Together, they spoke about following imaginative ideas and how art can impact one’s life. Both indicated that the way to achievement is by committing to dreams and putting in the work. Their wisdom and advice guided many in the audience to challenge themselves and accomplish their goals.
Overall, Jon Batiste left people inspired, shared lessons about hard work, and the importance of passion through his music and words.
