As graduation day approaches, I’ve been reflecting on the experiences that have made my high school years memorable. If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that the best moments often come from stepping outside of your comfort zone and truly embracing all that high school has to offer. Here’s my list of the top ten things every student should do before they toss their cap in the air.
1. Go to a School Dance
It’s not about having the perfect date or outfit. It’s about the experience — laughing with your friends, singing along to songs, and making memories that you’ll laugh about years later. Although there is no moshing, Seven Hills dances are memorable nights that you can have stories about for the future.
2. Join a New Club
Whether it’s 7Up, Robotics, Mock Trial, HOSA, or Yearbook, trying something new can introduce you to passions you didn’t even know you had — and people you might not have met otherwise.
3. Cheer on the Stingers
There’s something electric about being in the stands, painted up in school colors, chanting with your classmates. It’s a feeling of community you don’t want to miss.
4. Thank a Teacher or Mentor
Take the time to genuinely thank the people who have supported you. A handwritten note or a sincere conversation can mean more than you realize — to them and to you.
5. Attend (or don’t) Senior Skip Day
It’s a rite of passage — spend the day with the people with whom you have journeyed through high school. Time flies in senior year, and you want to soak up as much time and as many memories as possible.
6. Take a Risk in Class
Raise your hand in a tough class discussion. Present an idea you’re nervous about. High school is one of the few places where you can take academic risks without major consequences — take advantage of it.
7. Spend Time with People Outside Your Usual Friend Group
You’ll be surprised by the friendships that can form when you step outside your circle. It’s easy to stay comfortable, but some of your best memories might come from unexpected friendships.
8. Enjoy Senior Sunrise and Sunset
There’s something poetic about marking the passage of time together. It’s a simple but meaningful way to appreciate the fleeting nature of high school.
9. Reflect on How You’ve Grown
Before you get swept into college, careers, and adult life, take time to recognize how much you’ve changed since freshman year. It’s easy to miss the growth when you’re caught up in everyday life.
10. Say Goodbye the Right Way
Don’t ghost the people who mattered to you. Say goodbye — whether it’s a hug, a letter, or a simple “thank you.” Closure is underrated, and high school deserves a thoughtful ending.
High school isn’t perfect — and it’s not supposed to be. But the memories, friendships, and lessons you gather along the way are yours to keep forever. Make sure you walk across that stage with no regrets, knowing you made the most of it.
