Homecoming is the highlight of the year for many students as it is a fun night to dress up, dance, and reconnect with friends after a long summer. With access to shops from all over the world on the internet, attendees are more free to express themselves through what they wear. The most popular places to shop were online websites such as Revolve or Hello Molly, but some students chose to shop differently either in store or borrowing from friends.
For the past three years, I have bought my homecoming dress from online retailer Revolve because their app is very easy to navigate, and they provide complimentary two-day shipping and free returns. I know I want a short dress but besides that I do not have a preference for any certain color or fit.
As for how other students chose to shop, Junior Sophie Ottke Moore said she “borrowed [her dress] from a friend” and did not “really know and was kind of running out of time”, which led to her borrowing one from a friend.
Juniors Meg Corrado and Raine Ellerman chose to buy their dresses online and both had specific colors in mind. Raine said she knew she wanted “a white short dress” while Meg said she just wanted a “blue dress”.
Others do not seek out anything specific while they shop. Sophomore Avani Shah said she simply “was just looking around” when she found her dress.
Another exciting part of homecoming is bringing a date, which for some affects what they wear as they want to match.
Junior William Hueguenin expressed how this was a factor in what he wore to homecoming. He said “it was a big decision, because it came down to what my partner was wearing.” Hueguenin also said he wanted to match with her and “complement that look.”
While the theme of the dance was 80s, not many people chose to channel the 80’s in their dress. On the night of the dance, I noticed people opted for more fitted and sequin dresses. White, pink, black, and blue were the most popular colors.
Homecoming provides a fun way for the school community to reconnect and for people to display their personal style in a less formal setting than prom. With trend cycles moving faster than ever, I will be interested to see what people choose to wear to prom in May.
