Summer—the sun is shining, alarm clocks aren’t ringing, and many are still fast asleep until 12pm. Beach vacations and city travel plans form with family and friends. What could possibly go wrong? Jobs. Yes, you heard me right. Many of us students are scared of this word despite numerous students already having some measure of plans for a summer job. Whether it is sitting by a pool and lifeguarding or working at a summer camp, Seven Hills students work a variety of summer jobs, all holding different reasons and purposes.
Many students at the Seven Hills school are considering gaining a bit of extra experience across lots of departments in the workforce. It’s both a very helpful step and skill that will eventually get them further in life, provide both good and bad memories, and serve as a connection with people.
Junior Lemuel Zyyon employment over the summer is very smart but also very ambitious: “This summer, I will have three jobs; I will be working at a Seven Hills Summer Camp starting in June, working for CPS (Cincinnati Public Schools), and Target. I want to get my money up and have a good time this summer,” Zyyon said. Zyyon’s summer is something to look up to. Not one, not two, but three whole jobs? Zyyon’s summer will be very busy for him, but also very promising. Having so many different positions at different times of the summer ranging across so many fields is definitely a challenge, but also a learning experience. Balancing all the jobs would help a lot with growing skill in time management, showing how jobs can be helpful and how lots could be learned from them.
Senior Devin Best humorously revealed that perhaps he hasn’t had time to think about summer yet: “Don’t say that, I’m scared.” After revisiting the topic several minutes later, Devin provided a revised opinion on employment: “No, I normally work a random job every summer. This summer, I think I will be working at a daycare.” Best understands that although his plans are not entirely clear and planned out, he will be busy during break, as he has always turned towards working a job for the summer. Working at a daycare will be a new challenge for Best, as he’s never tried it before. It is clear he is ready to make the most of his summer by gaining new experience.
The sophomore class is also finding employment opportunities. Sophomore Matia Kastner mentioned some work opportunities coming up for him this summer: “I will be mowing people’s yards, solo. I just want to make some extra money, and mowing yards is a pretty easy job. I am also considering volunteering at First Tee,” said Kastner. Sophomore James Anthony said he plans to ” volunteer at a cat shelter just to get hours knocked out.” Sophomores also reported that in terms of popularity, a “decent amount of people in our grade are doing lifeguarding jobs this summer. That seems to be a pretty popular pick,” said Kastner. Lifeguarding is another compelling option for teenagers looking to work this summer, offering time flexibility, good pay, and the chance to work outside and enjoy the summer sun.
All in all, student plans for this summer contain a good balance of several characteristics, namely creativity, motivation, and practicality. Whether students are working part time jobs to get some quick cash, full time ones that will span past the summer, or even volunteering and doing good in the community for free, everyone is making the most out of their time away from school. This summer will not just be about rest, but also about responsibility, learning, and getting ahead for many at the Seven Hills School.
