There are many clubs and activities that The Seven Hills School offers for students. The clubs at the school are split into two main categories: Action Clubs and Social Clubs. Action Clubs focus on impacting the community in a positive manner. These types of clubs range from helping a non-profit organization to competing in nationwide competitions to providing a sports league for faculty and students during the school day. In contrast, Social Clubs provide a fun environment for students during lunch.
One of the new clubs that has been introduced this year is the Intramural Club. This club is a small sports league where faculty and students create teams and compete in sports tournaments at lunch. The most recent sport that was played was American football. This small league was not a club last year and was run by the student government. However, Junior Valmik Rathod mentioned how the club is able to thrive more with it being a club. Rathod said, “I don’t think it got the same care and attention that it could’ve gotten if it was separate.”
The process of creating this club was not too challenging considering it was already popular last year. Rathod stated that Dean Dan Polifka came to him and suggested that intramurals be turned into a club. Rathod and his team gathered an equipment manager, a field manager, and a referee manager. He spoke with the athletic department to secure locations and times. He and his team have been trying to schedule the tournaments when more people are free so more people can sign up.
Rathod said, “One of my goals is getting everyone to participate in at least one intramural during the year. This type of action club that is pretty unique among other clubs.”
Apart from Action Clubs, Social Clubs allow students to enjoy participating in them at school. A new Social Club introduced to the school is a Photography Club run by Junior Marshall Mert. Mert’s interest in photography sparked in his freshman year when he became interested in manual photography and developing black and white photos.
In his recent meeting, he went over shutter speed and aperture. His club has around 20 people right now, which is a good initial step for him to have. To help his club gain popularity, he was consistent with emails and had treats for students to enjoy in his club.
He hopes to develop negative images in the future in his club, but this will be a challenge for him since the materials would be hard to gather. Mert hopes to keep gaining members into his club to help him succeed in the future. He also hopes to help students spark their interests in photography.
Engaging in clubs at Seven Hills can be a great way to expose students to new things, spark creativity, and adventure. Every year, more and more clubs are added to the school and allow for students to participate in fun activities during the school day!
